There are indications that on December 6 the country might once again be reminded of the volatile ‘Ram Janmabhoomi mukti andolan’ launched by the saffron brigade in 1992. The andolan had led to the demolition of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya on December 6.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has once again rolled out plans to build up the 1992 aggression aimed at constructing a “grand” Ram temple in Ayodhya. The decision was taken at a meeting of top Hindu saints in Ayodhya recently. VHP secretary general Ashok Singhal will reprise his role — he will steer the campaign for the saffron brigade just as he had done in 1992.

As per its plan, the VHP will organise a dharma sabha (religious convention) of 10,000 Hindu saints from all over the country at Ayodhya on November 19. More worryingly for Mayawati, the VHP plans to congregate over 50,000 Ram bhakts (Ram’s devotees) for the occasion — a show of strength on the lines of the “symbolic” kar seva by more than one lakh devotees in 1992.

In fact, the VHP has unveiled a two-month long “Hanumat Jagran Mahayagya” through November and December during which the “Hanuman Chaleesa” would be recited 1,100 times in over 10,000 temples across the country. The idea is to “awaken” the Hindu majority to pledge its support for a Ram temple in Ayodhya.

As per Hindu mythology, Lord Hanuman did not realise his immense powers till the time he was “awakened” by Lord Ram’s grace.

Singhal made his intentions clear as he spoke to reporters in Ayodhya. “Any new mosque within the periphery of Ayodhya is just not acceptable,” he declared. “After all, it’s just another mosque for them… it can be built anywhere… whereas for the Hindus, this is the birthplace of Bhagwan Ram,” he said. “The Muslims should give up their claim if they want to foster brotherly relations… it’s a great opportunity for them to show they are considerate and benevolent.”

VHP’s state president Narendra Singh Bhadauria gave a clearer idea. “The bigger the objective, the bigger the sacrifice needed to accomplish that goal,” he said. The “dharma sabha”, Bhadauria said, would be a “historic” occasion. He also referred to the fact that the status quo of 90 days as decreed by the Allahabad high court’s September 30 verdict would expire at the end of the year. “Things could change by the turn of the year”, was all he said.
