A wanted criminal and bootlegger, Rafiq Gauy, was arrested by the Special Operation Group (SOG) of  the Vadodara police on Saturday night. The police recovered six boxes containing 288 quarters of IMFL along with a Tata Indica car and a rickshaw from the spot. The arrest of Rafiq Gauy is considered a major success of the Vadodara police.

After the recent hooch tragedy, Vadodara police were searching for him. On Saturday, the SOG PSI, HM Alsika, received information that Rafiq is to visit Tarsali for delivering  a liquor consignment.

On the basis of this information, SOG officials set up a watch at the Gujarat housing board located at Tarsali. They found a rickshaw coming to the housing board. Within no time, a Wagon-R car also reached there. They then saw Rafiq deliver a box of liquor to the rickshaw driver.

The police officials immediately nabbed Rafiq, but the rickshaw driver, Shailesh alias Marshal Kanu Jaishwal, managed to escape. During investigations, the police seized six boxes, which contained 288 quarters of IMFL liquor. The police seized the autorickshaw and the car.

According to Alsika, Rafiq started as a chain snatcher, but is now involved in cases related to loot, murder, smuggling of narcotics, and violation of prohibition and Arms Act. There are about six cases of robbery and two of murder against him. He got his nickname of  'guay' (cow) because of his innocent face and his decent way of talking.

Alsika said that his arrest will provide important clues in various cases. He was wanted at the Sayajigunj police station.
