Uttar Pradesh assembly okays anti-ragging bill

To effectively check the menace of ragging in educational institutions, the Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha today passed a bill in this regard which provides for a two-year jail term for the guilty.

"The UP Shaikshik Sansthaon Mein Ragging Ka Pratishedh (Prevention of Ragging in Educational Institutions)" bill was passed by the House by a voice vote.

The legislation provides for a two-year jail term or a fine of Rs10,000 or both for those found guilty of indulging in ragging.

The bill also contains a provision to debar the guilty from seeking admission for five years in any educational institution in the state. The legislation will cover all schools, colleges, universities, boarding hostels and coaching institutions.
