Wrong economic policies followed by the UPA government and bad governance are responsible for the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities and problems like continuing farmers' suicides and growing unemployment, BJP president Nitin Gadkari said in Hyderabad today.

"The first year of the Congress-led UPA government's second term in office has been a total failure on all fronts. It's singular 'achievement' has been unabated price rise, double-digit inflation and unending hardships to the common man," Gadkari, who arrived in Hyderabad on a three-day visit, said.

Highlighting the alleged failures of UPA-II, he pointed out that inflation is hovering between 17-20%, agriculture has recorded negative growth and there is high unemployment in urban and rural areas.

Gadkari demanded the central government to give top priority to agro-economy and proper fund allocation for agricultural development and agricultural infrastructure.

Referring to media reports Gadkari denied having talked about internal differences within the BJP at the convention of chief ministers of BJP-ruled states yesterday.

Accusing the UPA government of adopting wrong water policies which adversely affected the agriculture in the country, the BJP president alleged that the much needed river linking project formulated by the BJP led NDA government has been shelved by the Congress.

In southern India, hardly any attention has been paid to the formation of South India River Grid, interlinking rivers like Mahandi, Godavari, Krishna and Cauvery, the BJP chief said.

"If BJP comes to power, it would give top priority to river connectivity project", he said.

Referring to Andhra Pradesh where the Congress government completed its first year of the second term, Gadkari said there was nothing but chaos on all fronts here.

He said Naxalism is spreading in the state and the political leadership of the ruling Congress party is sharply divided on all major issues.

The state government is trying to withdraw welfare schemes such as fee reimbursement and scholarships to students belonging to backward class, SC, ST and minority, he alleged.

When asked to comment on Srikrishna committee set up to go into demand of separate statehood for Telangana and unified Andhra Pradesh, the BJP president said the Congress has been creating more problems and "the committee is a time pass exercise."

Responding to a query Gadkari said his party was ready to support a bill for the formation of a separate Telangana state if the UPA government moves such a bill in parliament.

The BJP chief said his party was 100% in favour of separate statehood for Telangana region.

Gadkari said if the Congress party is sincere about the issue, let it bring a bill in parliament and our party would support it.
