In the second such attempt in less than a week, unidentified robbers tried to take away an ATM machine of the State Bank of India (SBI) in Timarpur area of north Delhi early this morning, police said.

Police said the incident came to light at around 6 am after a customer of the bank went to the ATM booth to withdraw money.

"He found the machine in disarray and immediately made a call to police control room," they said.

Police said the robbers first tried to break open the locker where the money was kept and after failing to open it, they tried to take away the machine.

The ATM centre did not have any guards.

In a similar incident two masked robbers had barged into an ATM centre of the Punjab National Bank (PNB) in north-east Delhi last Monday and attempted to decamp with the cash after taking the security guard hostage at gunpoint.

The duo tried to cut open the ATM machine in Shahdara for about 30 minutes before fleeing from the scene.
