Eighteen persons were taken into custody for aiding and abetting the escape of two under trials from police custody while they were being escorted back to jail after a court hearing here, police said today.

Around 20-25 relatives of three under trials Kuldeep Parihar, Bhim Mehtar and Vinod Kanojia threw chili powder in the eyes of policemen who were taking the accused back to Bhopal Central Jail after producing them before a local court last evening here in connection with a murder case, they said.

The police opened fire despite their eyes burning with chili powder and managed to hold Vinod back but Parihar and Bhim managed to escape, police said.

The police, however, succeeded in catching one of accused's brothers identified as Jeetu and detained 18 others for further investigation, they said.
