The economic crisis in the US and Europe coupled with the unprecedented riots in Britain Thursday  resonated in the Lok Sabha with members cautioning following their model of development would be disastrous for India.

Members from BJP, JD(U), CPI, Samajwadi Party, RJD and BSP demanded a discussion in the House on the matter.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Murli Manohar Joshi (BJP) said the developments in the US economy and the problems being faced by the European Union would have their impact all over the world.

He said this could culminate in problems for the Indian IT companies there and pose problems for the Indians there following demands that non-American or non-British be sent back.

Joshi said a large stock of dollars were kept by India in the US treasury and the developments in Washington also posed problems for China.

In view of the serious economic situation, Joshi said, the prices of gold and silver shot up in an unprecedented manner.

He said there should be a thorough discussion on the issue.

Joshi was supported by JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav, CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, RJD president Lalu Prasad and BSP's Vijay Bahadur Singh.

They warned against blindly aping the the US and West.

Yadav accused the government of becoming a lackey of the US and taunted "you always keep chanting America, America... America has now gone bankrupt."

Describing the situation in the US as "serious", he said lakhs of Indians are fleeing that country and wanted to know what the government was doing or planning to do.

Noting Joshi had raised a "serious issue", Lalu Prasad alleged the influence of the US was destroying India's age-old culture of saints and sages.

He used the occasion to express concern over recent 'slut walk' in Delhi, use of Facebook, celebration of Valentine's Day and the Delhi High Court order decriminalising homosexuality.

There was an exchange in a lighter vein between him and Deputy Speaker Kariya Munda.

Munda said the issue was serious and asked Prasad whether he was serious. Responding, the RJD chief said, "if you don't have interest, then I will sit."

Gurudas Dasgupta (CPI) said all members are unanimous in emphasising the country should not follow the US model else India may also face similar problems.

He said the country was sitting on a volcano.

Vijay Bahadur Singh (BSP) said in the 50s, India aped the USSR which later disintegrated into several states. He said after the collapse of Soviet Union now India is emulating the US, as a result of which cars and their parts are being manufactured more than foodgrain.
