Two scientists to get PRL’s ‘Senior Scientist Award’

Banibrata Mukhopadhyay of Indian Institute of Science will be bestowed with Buti Foundation Award.

Eminent scientist Prof Yash Pal and Prof Man Mohan Sharma have been selected for the prestigious Senior Scientist Award of Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) for 2010, while Bangalore-based Indian Institute of Science’s Banibrata Mukhopadhyay has been chosen for the Buti Foundation Award, 2011.

The trio will be felicitated at a function to be organised at KR Ramanathan auditorium at the PRL in the city on November 11. Mukhopadhyay will deliver a lecture on ‘Black Hole’s Turbulent Brew’, while Sharma will talk on ‘The Exciting and Rewarding World of Chemical Engineering’.

In addition, Prof Yash Pal will address the audience at the award function where Professor UR Rao, chairman of Council of Management of PRL, will be the chief guest.

Shri Hari Om Ashram Prerit Dr Vikram Sarabhai senior scientist Award and Buti Foundation Award are presented biennially. The senior scientist award is given to Indian scientists for their outstanding contribution to science and technology.

An endowment fund was created by Hari Om Ashram Trust which is administered by PRL. The recipient is bestowed with a silver plate, citation and cash prize of Rs2 lakh.

Buti Foundation award is given to young scientists below 45 years for innovative and outstanding research work in India in the field of plasma science and technology. The award carries a citation, a silver medal and a cash prize of Rs50,000.

A recipient of Padma Bhushan, Prof Yash Pal has been bestowed with a number of awards for his contribution to science and space technology. He has made vital contribution in the field of cosmic rays, high energy physics, astrophysics, science education and communication.

Prof Sharma’s contributory areas are chemical engineering and science and in particular microphase chemical reactions. Mukhopadhyay’s research interests encompass a wide canvass ranging from physics, astrophysics, cosmology, astroparticle physics and their interface.
