Two rowdies shot dead in encounter in Madurai

Two notorious rowdies were shot dead by police in an encounter when they attacked the latter during a vehicle check here today, police said.

Kalamandaiyan and Kaviarasu, allegedly involved in various robberies and rape cases, hacked Sub-Inspector Thennarasu and Constable Ganesan with sickles when they were stopped for vehicle check at a checkpost, they said.
    
Police then opened fire, killing the rowdies.

The SI and the constable suffered injuries in the attack. They had been admitted to the Government Rajaji Hospital where their condition was stable, police said.
