Residents of Bopal will heave a sigh of relief as their traffic woes are likely to end very soon. The Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) has started working on its development plan after nearly two years of adopting the twin town of Ahmedabad. The AUDA has started working on widening the main road of Bopal with a view to easing traffic congestion.

Resident of Bopal and Ghuma had to face traffic problems as the narrow roads could not accommodate the increase in traffic in the last couple of years with development of the area.

The population of Bopal has increased steeply but the lack of infrastructure caused lot of trouble to the residents.
AUDA has started widening of around 2.1 km road leading from SP Ring Road to India Colony.

The urban development authority would add around seven meters wide lane to the existing road. "The work has just begun and we expect it to be completed within two-and-a-half months," said MK Patel, executive engineer of AUDA.

The urban development authority would need to remove the encroachments coming in the way of widening the road. This process would consume more time, otherwise the traffic woes of the residents of Bopal could have been solved much earlier, said Patel.

"People are delighted by the move," said Anjana Patel, sarpanch of Bopal.

However, she said the authority should have started acting much earlier. "We had to present our case time and again to the urban development authority for widening of roads," she said.

The people of Bopal have welcomed AUDA's decision. "The area needs two facilities very badly; one is drainage system and other is wider  roads," said Paresh Ramavat, a resident of Bopal.

Ramvat said that in the last couple of years, the population of Bopal and Ghuma has increased by around 40,000 resulting in heavy traffic on main road particularly during rush hours. He also said the AUDA should expedite work on the main road and start widening of internal roads also.

AUDA official also said that they have invited tenders for laying drainage lines on the road leading to SP Ring Road from Gala Gymkhana.

"The tenders have already been invited and work will start within a month," he said. However, Bopal would benefit from the drainage system only when it is joined to the mega drainage pipeline of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation by December 2011. AUDA will try to finish work on their part much before that, he said.

The AUDA is also planning to develop another road parallel to the railway track.

However, it would take AUDA around one year to complete. "When this road comes up, it will considerably reduce traffic on the main road," he said.
