Two BJP activists were killed when they were attacked with crude bombs and stabbed allegedly by CPI-M workers at New Mahe locality, triggering tension in the politically sensitive district, police said.

The incident occurred at around 1130 hours as the victims were proceeding on a motorcycle after appearing in a court in connection with an attempt to murder case involving CPI-M
workers, they said.

The assailants first hurled bombs at the duo before stabbing them. One person died on the spot, while the other succumbed to injuries on his way to a hospital in Kozhikode.

The deceased were identified as K Vijith (28) and Sinoj (30).

Police is maintaining strict vigil in the area. Kannur district is known for political clashes between ruling CPI-M and BJP workers.

While the BJP alleged that CPI (M) was involved in the attack, CPI (M) refuted the charge maintaining that the two were killed after explosives in their possession went off.

Alleging that the duo were involved in as many as eight murder cases, CPI-M area secretary Karayi Rajan said the Left party had no role in the incident. The BJP workers got killed as the  explosives in their possession went off while they were riding a motorcycle, he added.

Police declined to reveal the attackers' identity.

Meanwhile,IGP (North) Sudhesh Kumar visited the spot while superintendent of police K P Philip is camping in the area to supervise law and order situation.

The BJP has called for a day long hartal in Kannur district
tomorrow to protest the attack.

While shops and business houses would remain closed, the BJP has excluded vehicles from the purview of the hartal.

The bodies of the victims have been shifted to Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode for post-mortem examination, party sources said adding cremation would be held tomorrow.

BJP leaders, including state president V Maralidharan, visited the spot.
