Three bills tabled by the government were passed on the fourth day of the current assembly session on Tuesday. While the bills were passed in the first sitting in the morning, the House discussed the stampede at Shivratri fair in Junagadh in the second sitting in the afternoon.

The assembly also initiated the debate over the motion of thanks on the governor’s speech in the second sitting.

In the first sitting, education minister Ramanlal Vora tabled two bills. The first bill was the Gujarat Professional Technical Educational Colleges or Institutions (Regulation of Admission and Fixation of Fees) (Amendment) Bill, 2012 and the second was the bill for changing the name of Bhavnagar University.

Taking part in the debate over the first bill presented by Vora, senior Congress MLA Arjun Modhwadia said, “There is a great disparity in the fee structure of state government-run educational institutes and self-financed institutes. Many capable students cannot afford high fees of the professional courses in SFIs. This bill is not in the interest of students of Gujarat and if the bill is passed, it will be the victory of the vested interests in the higher education.”
