They came to him for water, he fired in reply

Delayed monsoons have started showing its adverse effects - and besides heat, water woes have hit the city hard.

The worst picture of water scarcity was seen on Monday when clash over water scarcity in Timba village in Aslali area in rural area of Ahmedabad, resulted in firing of two rounds. In yet another incident of its kind, a group of women took out a rally in Vasna against the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) for poor supply of drinking water.

In the first incident Aslali police were on its toes when Kanu Patel, sarpanch of Timba gram panchayat allegedly fired two rounds from his licensed point blank gun on a crowd who had come to him with complaint of water scarcity in the area, and injured one.

The injured, Mahendra Vaghela was rushed to the civil hospital with two bullet wounds on his arm and face and his condition is believed to be critical.

Sarpanch Patel and his aides fired on Vaghela, a resident of Timba village. According to the police investigating the matter, "A group of people headed by Vaghela, went to Patel to complain about water scarcity on Sunday." Investigating officer and police sub inspector, Aslali police station, AB Valand told DNA that the group tried to convey to the sarpanch the problem of water scarcity in their area, which, however, turned into heated argument, upon which Patel opened fired on Vaghela.

However, Patel too has filed a police complaint against the crowd for allegedly attacking him and his relatives at his residence.
Valand said that the same group of people had gone to the sarpanch with the same complaint on Friday, which was resolved by Patel. 

However, the problem reoccurred again on Sunday. "The sarpanch got the water pump fixed on Friday, but later refused to act on the same issue on Sunday, for which, the crowd started getting agitated," Valand said.

In another incident, a group of women from Juhapura agitated against the Ahmedabad Municipal Authority for water scarcity in their area.

More than 4,000 women and children from Juhapura area on Monday took out a rally over the poor water supply in the area. The rally later converged as dharna with women and children squatting at Juhapura crossroads, demanding immediate restoration of regular supply of water. The protestors also conducted a chakka jaam in the area for more than four hours; rallyist covering more than 2 kilometres in length.

On receiving the information, the Vejalpur police including other senior officials rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the agitating crowd.
