The West Bengal and Kolkata Police beefed up security at vital installations in and around Kolkata on Thursday following a terror alert notice by the Union ministry of home affairs.

According to the alert, the vitals junctions and constructions in and around Kolkata are likely terror targets of underground terrorist outfit Indian Mujahideen.

The possible targets include the national and international airports in Kolkata, important railway stations, the Kali temple at Kalighat, the Dakshineswar Kali temple at North 24-Parganas and shopping malls.

The director-general of Bengal police, Bhupinder Singh, said there are inputs that some terrorist groups are planning action in and around Kolkata. “However, we are alert and will take necessary steps to foil any such attempt,” Singh said.

According to a Kolkata Police officer, there is a blanket security cover on all entry and exit points to and from the city. “All vehicles are being checked,” he said.

Plainclothes sleuths are also keeping watch over the vital installations.
