Ten thefts per day in Ahmedabad’s posh western localities

The next time you boast of Ahmedabad being a safe city, perhaps you should take a look at the latest statistics released by the state home department.

And if you are a resident of one of the posh localities in the state then you are advised to take a closer look at the crime figures. For, the statistics revealed by the home department state that on an average 20 thefts occur in the city every day. Half of these thefts are reported from posh localities. The figures indicate that posh localities like Satellite, Vastrapur, Navrangpura and Naranpura among others are the most vulnerable for various such crimes like theft of laptop, being robbed near a bank and so on. Satellite, topped the chart with 849 thefts being registered in the Satellite police station in the year 2009.Satellite is followed by Vastrapur with 765 thefts.

Police sources said that these areas are vulnerable as they house some of the wealthy residents who carry lots of cash and valuable articles. "Most of the thefts held in these areas revolve around people being robbed after withdrawing money from a bank or laptops being stolen from parked cars," a police source said.
