Thousands of Telangana supporters formed a human chain in Telangana region today to press for the separate Telangana statehood demand.

The all-party Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC) convener C Kodandaram told reporters that the human chain was formed from Adilabad to Mahabubnagar district.

"It was 500 km-long and we feel that it was the longest in the country so far," he told reporters. The movement of traffic was not disrupted due to the human chain, he said.

In Hyderabad, the human chain was formed at the Hussain Sagar lake and also near Charminar. The programme was not permitted by the police at Kukatpally in the city, where a substantial people from non-Telangana regions reside.

To a query, Kodandaram said the Congress was still a part of the JAC. Congress leaders never said they would withdraw from the JAC, he said.

The human chain was part of the week-long protests being organised by the JAC to press the Centre for accepting the separate Telangana demand.

As part of the agitation, the JAC would organise "Vanta Varpu" (preparing and eating food) and "Aata Pata" performance of various festival-related celebrations and also games) on the Hyderabad-Warangal highway and Hyderabad to Adilabad district highway, Kodandaram said.
