A simple gesture of intimating people of an apolitical event like opening of a hospital and inviting them to attend it can stir up a controversy if the place is West Bengal and the person giving away the invitation letter is Tata Group chairman, Ratan Tata.

Following a day of speculation by the media about the content of a letter purportedly written by Ratan Tata to Mamata Banerjee inviting her to the opening of a hospital that he has built in Kolkata, the Tatas were forced to reveal the contents to show that no letter was written exclusively to the would-be chief minister who forced his most ambitious project out of the state.

“Letters about the intended commencement of the hospital were also sent to a group that included the prime minister Manmohan Singh, other Union cabinet ministers, the chief minister of West Bengal and state ministers and the leader of the opposition, and the chief ministers of the north-eastern states, and senior bureaucrats,” a release issue by the Tatas said today evening.

The letters were signed by RK Krishna Kumar, trustee of Tata Medical Centre Trust, which executed the project.
