Swine flu kills one more in Surat, Gujarat toll touches 18

Blood samples of the victim tested positive for the flu. Though he was given treatment, doctors were unable to save him

Swine flu claimed one more life in Surat on Monday, while another person died of suspected swine flu virus. With this death, the number of people who have died due to swine flu in Surat has gone up to five, taking
the statewide toll to 18. On Monday, three more people having symptoms of swine flu were admitted to New Civil Hospital.
The man who died of swine flu was identified as Vinod Upadhyay, 40, a resident of Jalaramnagar, Pandesara. He was being treated at the isolation ward of the hospital.
The blood samples of Upadhyay, which had been sent to BJ Medical College, tested positive for the flu. Upadhyay was admitted to the hospital on September 10 with symptoms like bad cough, soar throat and high fever. Though he was given all necessary treatment, doctors were unable to save him.
"We have quarantined his family members and have asked them to undergo the complete treatment course,'' hospital superintendent
MK Wadhel said. He added that how Upadhyay got
infected with the virus was still unknown.
Meanwhile, another man identified as Ajay Choudhry, 30, a resident of Salya village in Mandvi taluka, died at the New Civil Hospital on Monday. Ajay was studying at ITI at Majura gate. He had been admitted to the hospital late on Sunday night.
Ajay was having swine flu-like symptoms and for that the doctors had sent his blood samples to BJ Medical College for testing. Ajay died before his report could arrive. Also on Monday, three more suspected cases were admitted to the isolation ward of the hospital.
