Suspicious movement of an SUV with a fake security sticker near the main venue of Commonwealth Games triggered a security scare in the Capital as armed commandos scrambled to intercept the vehicle only to find a CBI official occupying it.

The incident took place on the eve of the concluding ceremony of the Commonwealth Games at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium where a host of VIPs including the president, the prime minister and the Sri Lankan president are likely to participate.

According to sources, the Delhi police had yesterday flashed an alert to central security agencies and to the home ministry's control room that a 'suspicious' vehicle had been seen entering Delhi from Noida with a Uttar Pradesh registration number.

The security agencies, including Delhi Police and paramilitary forces, scrambled their men and the 'Sumo' vehicle was spotted at Gate number one of the Central Government Offices (CGOs) complex at 0935 hours next to the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

Soon after, armed commandos surrounded the vehicle and asked the occupants to come out. It came to light that the vehicle was being driven by a Uttar Pradesh police constable.

On questioning, it was found that the occupant of the vehicle was an assistant superintendent of police of the CBI's Anti-Corruption Bureau in Delhi.

"It was found that there was a mismatch between the registration number on the security sticker and the number plate of the vehicle," an official said.

Delhi police officials immediately detained the CBI official and whisked him away to the Lodhi Road police station for questioning.

The official then explained to the sleuths that he had put the security sticker issued by the home ministry for CGO complex entry after taking it from another vehicle and hence the mismatch.

Senior Delhi police officials checked the CBI official's credentials and later released him, sources said.
