Sushma Swaraj, the newly-appointed leader of opposition in Lok Sabha, is planning a training programme for the BJP’s 116 members in the House.

She will, in consultation with senior RSS leaders, also set up a system of shadow standing committees for MPs who want to learn more about the various issues of national and international importance.

Swaraj and leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley and leaders of party-affiliated institutions such as the Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini and Vivekananda Foundation will meet on February 2 to evolve an institutionalised way to train the MPs.

Swaraj told reporters on Friday this was to make sure the party never lacks skilled speakers on technically-rich subjects such as agriculture, climate change, WTO negotiations and of course, the budget.

Shadow standing committees will also be set up for members who could not find a place on departmental standing committees dealing with various ministries of the government.

“We found that several of our MPs are interested in a host of subjects but constraint of numbers prevented them from becoming members of committees in parliament,” Swaraj said.

Former ministers Yashwant Sinha (finance) and Murli Manohar Joshi (HRD), among others, will lecture the BJP MPs.

Not all, however, are enthusiastic. Former party president Rajnath Singh said he was not interested in joining any shadow committee.

“I am not an expert lecturer and have not given my name for any committee,” he said.  Rajnath’s area of expertise is considered to be agriculture.
