With an aim to contain population of stray dogs in the city, Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has decided to go for dog sterilisation and castration. The civic body has completed all the procedures for the project and has even selected a partner organisation for the same.
SMC will carry out the work with the help of an NGO, Animal Welfare Board. The NGO staff will be paid Rs546 per castration and sterilisation by the civic body.SMC will provide the basic facilities like building, vehicle and required manpower for carrying out the work. The decision has been taken after several complaints regarding stray dogs were reported in the city.
"We will use new technique CNVR for castration of stray dogs. This is not only effective but also much cheaper than the one practiced now. Animal Welfare Board is engaged in this work in other cities as well," said Prafful Mehta, in charge, zoo superintendent of SMC.
According to Mehta, preliminary castration and sterilisation activity will be carried out in areas which are most affected by stray dog menace. Civic staff will accompany NGO workers to make sure the procedure is carried out smoothly.
SMC will also start a helpline, wherein citizens suffering from stray dog menace can register their complaint. The control room will operate round the clock and will function in conjunction with the NGO.
"There are more than 20,000 stray dogs in the city and the number is increasing each passing day. Following numerous complaints, the decision has been taken. If the NGO does the job well, we can think of implementing the plan on a permanent basis," Hemant Desai, deputy commissioner (health & hospitals) of SMC, said.
