The Pandesara police have arrested the accused in the Jigisha rape and murder case. Within 48 hours of finding the victim's body, the police with the help of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) footage, caught the culprit who happens to be Jigisha's neighbour.
Santosh Maharana, 20, resident of Morarji Vasant in Udhna and a power-loom worker, lured his neighbour, a four-year old girl, by giving her vadapav and later abducted her.
While cops interrogated Santosh, he confessed to the crime and narrated the entire story of how he kidnapped, raped and murdered the little girl.
Police said that Jigisha knew Santosh and when he lured her, she followed him. "Both walked separately and took the road from Morarji Vasant to Surat-Navsari main road. There Santosh hired an auto-rickshaw and took the victim to an abandoned house at Vadod, where he raped her and later strangled her to death," said RK Amin, inspector at Pandesara police station.
Amin added that the power-loom unit where Santosh worked is just 250 metres from the crime spot. The police started their interrogation by questioning the unit's workers.
The cops found blood stained garment from Santosh's room. The blood samples have been sent to the laboratory for testing.
Apart from other proofs, CCTV footage of a company located near Morarji Vasant also helped in nabbing Santosh. In the footage, Santosh and Jigisha are seen walking, him first and later Jigisha following. The footages were found by the company officials soon after Jigisha went missing late on Sunday evening.
"I want the police to hand over Santosh to us, so that we can punish him for his heinous act. Until he is hanged we won't rest and will continue to fight for justice," said Jagdish Rathod, Jigisha's father.
As the dead body was found at Pandesara, the Pandesara police have registered a case against Santosh and are investigating the case.
