How desperate people are for government jobs can be fathomed by a recent employment scam that has shocked everyone in the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC). To be employed in class-IV category, candidates used fake educational documents, including mark-sheets. The cheating was unearthed after SMC conducted applicant document verification.

To fill vacant posts in Class-IV category, an employment drive was initiated by SMC in 2008-09. More than 1200 positions were to be filled by the civic body, for which interviews were conducted. All appointment of selected candidates were done after basic verification of the academic certificates, and appointment letters were sent by 2009-10.

Selected candidates were offered jobs in failaria, drainage, welfare and public health departments. However, the fraud was revealed after the SMC conducted an inquiry into the documents. To its shock, the civic body found that several employees' certificates were bogus.

An inquiry with the school made the SMC realise that they had no such students with them.

After learning the truth, the civic body terminated 54 employees and ordered verification of other candidates. At present, 1145 employees who have secured job are under the scanner. They shall receive the same treatment if their certificates are found to be bogus.

"During investigation, we found that these 54 employees had produced fake documents while joining services. We have initiated action and terminated them. An inquiry is being conducted for the others and if any complaint is received, action will be initiated," Bankim Desai, personal officer of SMC, said.

Sources say that municipal commissioner S Aparna signed the termination letters, although interestingly, no police complaint has been filed yet.
