The Supreme Court has sought to know from the UPA government whether the criteria of being an outstanding civil servant have been met while appointing PJ Thomas as chief vigilance commissioner.

Thomas was the secretary of department of telecommunication when telecom minister A Raja doled out the 2G spectrum contracts allegedly at throwaway prices two years ago.

The 2G spectrum scam allegedly caused losses of Rs70,000 crore losses to the exchequer. His name also figured in the slippery Palmolein oil scam in Kerala.
