Suffocation kills manhole worker in Ahmedabad

The injured worker was admitted to the VS Hospital. Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has lodged a complaint of negligence against the private industrial estate.

Cleaning of a sanitary sewer line turned deadly on Sunday, when one manhole worker died and another one was hospitalised after suffering suffocation. The accident occurred at Ajay Industrial Estates located in Dhudheshwar area. The injured worker was admitted to the VS Hospital. Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has lodged a complaint of negligence against the private industrial estate.

On Sunday afternoon, AMC's fire and emergency department received a rescue call from Ajay Industrial Estate. When the fire brigade officials reached the spot, they found two labourers suffering suffocation at the bottom of the manhole. The officials shifted them to VS Hospital, where one Amar Solanki was declared dead, while another worker is undergoing the treatment at the hospital.

IK Patel, deputy municipal commissioner of central zone of AMC, said that three people were assigned the task of cleaning the drainage line by a private contractor. While they were working in the manhole, two people suffered suffocation, while the third person ran away from the spot, said Patel. The civic body carried out an investigation as the accident took place in the private industrial estate. VH Patel, additional city engineer of central zone of AMC, has lodged a complaint of negligence against the owner of the industrial estate.
