The deputy general manager (DGM) of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's heritage project, PK Vasudevan Nayar, on Monday visited the chabutara along with a photographer and two officials.

The visit comes in the wake of recent reports published by DNA about the stolen figurines from the chabutara under the Ellisbridge.

Nayar said the chabutara is definitely an important monument of the city, and it might be over 250 years old.

"I took first hand information from the residents about the missing figurines from the chabutara. It seems that three to four figurines must have been stolen recently, whereas one or two have been missing for quite some time," said Nayar. He recovered one figurine that was lying on the chabutara unattended. "For safety reasons, we have taken that one figurine in our custody, and have also taken pictures of the chabutara for our reference," added Nayar.

According to Nayar, the chabutara was neglected as it was not registered in the list of heritage monuments of the city. "I want to thank DNA for bringing this important monument to our notice. We will try to include the chabutara to the revisited list of monuments," said Nayar.

The location of the chabutara is the reason why they were not listed in the official list of heritage monuments of the city.

The chabutara is located just outside the limits of the old city wall which is considered as the boundary line while considering heritage monuments.

Nayar also gave an assurance that the heritage committee will definitely work towards the inclusion of all such monuments located outside the old wall.

According to AMC's heritage committee chairperson Bijal Patel, the committee is determined to protect the monument at any cost.

"We are in the process of revising the old list of heritage structures  of the city and will also try our best to look after such neglected monuments of the city," said Patel.
