A substitute provided by a domestic help decided to unburden his temporary employer of bothering about the valuables. He simply stole the jewellery worth Rs2.89 lakh from his employer's apartment in Vastrapur.

Asha Dhannavate, a resident of Pratistha Apartments in Bodakdev filed a police complaint with the Vastrapur police after Gopal Meena, a substitute provided by her domestic help, escaped with jewellery worth Rs2.89 lakh.

Dhannavate had mentioned in her complaint that Harish Chandrali, a resident of Dungarpur in Rajasthan, and her regular domestic help, wanted to leave for his village during Holi.  "When he asked for a leave, we asked him for a replacement and he sent Gopal," she said in her complaint.   A police source said that Gopal, a substitute for Chadrali, escaped with the jewellery between 11 am and 12 pm on Monday. The police source said that Meena is a resident of Amalavya village in Selumbur Taluka of Udaipur. Police sources said many servants leave for their hometown during Holi. "The employers don't bother to get the details of the person they have hired as a replacement," said the source. Police is investigating the matter.
