The General Council and Executive Committee of the DMK will begin their two-day meetings in Coimbatore on Saturday. The session will discuss the reasons for the debacle in the assembly election held in April.
Muthuvel Karunanidhi, the DMK patriarch, may entrust his second son MK Stalin with more party responsibilities.
“We do not rule out the possibility of Karunanidhi elevating Stalin to the post of general secretary. Right now Ambazhagan is the general secretary of the party. He is 90 and may not be able to manage the work load associated with his responsibilities. So the only option is to make Stalin the general secretary. We all feel it is time for Ambazhagan to retire gracefully,” said a source close to Karunanidhi.

“Don’t expect any major announcements. There is a strong feeling that it is time for Stalin is given with more responsibilities as he will be leading the party in the next assembly elections. We have to make a beginning somewhere,” said the source.
The Coimbatore city is all decked up for the party meeting. The entire city has been decorated with the DMK flags and posters featuring Karunanidhi and Stalin. Conspicuous by its absence are the pictures of M K Alagiri, Karunanidhi’s eldest son and the Madurai strongman.
“This shows how much influence Alagiri has in the party. He may be a chieftain in Madurai. But in the DMK , Karunanidhi and Stalin are the leaders who command wholehearted respect and support of the cadre,” said Mohan, a party functionary.
The general council will also discuss the possible nominees of the party to the union council of ministers. The Prime Minister has kept two portfolios in the council vacant to accommodate the DMK nominees as and when Karunanidhi announces the names.
The vacancies were caused by the exit of A Raja and Dayanidhi Maran following the 2G controversy.
