Vinodbhai Makwana, a BCom graduate, who worked with a courier company in east Ahmedabad, was found dead near IP Mission high school in Raikhad after he allegedly consumed spurious liquor.

A source close to the development said that Makwana was an educated man but chose not to marry. Makwana’s father asked him to leave his house after which he started living a life of a wanderer. He was last spotted by someone on Friday morning, sitting outside a pan shop in Raikhad area in an inebriated condition.

Makwana was not the only victim. The spurious liquor also claimed the lives of two of his friends, Raman Thakore, whose body was found on a pedal rickshaw on the Sabarmati riverbank adjacent to the Victoria garden, and Chotilal, whose body was found at the Khanpur lake ki chali. The trio had allegedly consumed spurious liquor on Thursday night along with four others Amarsinh Datani, Katu Godar, Ravi alias Imran and Mahendra Makwana.

The source said that the trio had bought the liquor from Sarkhej as other places where liquor is sold were shut down because of the growing pressure from the police post-hooch tragedy. “In all the likelihood, one of the three must have gone to Sarkhej and got the stuff,” said the source adding that Chotilal was taken to his house because he couldn’t even walk after consuming the spurious liquor.

The police are, however, maintaining that the cause of death of the three is yet to be ascertained. ACP ‘E’ Division HK Mehta told mediapersons, “The exact cause of death is not known, but it is suspected that they had consumed some kind of chemical substance.” Officials reached the spot where Makwana’s dead body was found after they received a call from the police control room.

Seema Datani, daughter-in-law of Amarsinh Datani, who got admitted to the VS hospital after he consumed the spurious liquor, looked devastated. She first lost her husband three months back because of spurious liquor, and is now a silent spectator to her father-in-law’s ill health for the same reason.

Seema told DNA, “We learnt that my father-in-law and three others bought the liquor for Rs30 convinced that it was not spurious.” Amarsinh, 75, said that as soon as he consumed the liquor he started experiencing nausea and weakness.

Katu Godar, 65, who was also admitted to the hospital said, “I consumed just one peg of the liquor, but started feeling drowsy shortly afterwards. I was then brought to the hospital.”

Similarly, a relative of Vinodbhai Makwana, who was found dead near IP Mission high school in Raikhad after he allegedly consumed spurious liquour, said, “He was addicted to liquor, and I think it was after he consumed the substance that he died.”
