The Punjab and Haryana high court today adjourned till November 8 the plea of disgraced former DGP SPS Rathore for parole in Ruchika molestation case, in which he is currently serving an 18-month jail term.

The court of RC Gupta adjourned the matter till next hearing after a union territory counsel sought more time to respond on the plea of the 68-year-old former Haryana police chief.

With the court deferring the matter, Rathore would be spending this Diwali behind the bars.

The Chandigarh prison authorities had recently sought a reply from Panchkula district administration on the plea of Rathore, who had cited agricultural operations and failing health as the main reasons in his prayer last month.

Ruchika, a budding tennis player, had committed suicide three years after being molested by Rathore on August 12, 1990.

Earlier this month, Panchkula administration had sent its report to prison authorities here on Rathore's plea for parole in the case.

Rathore, who is lodged in high security Burail jail in Chandigarh since May end this year, had stated in his application that he wanted to be released on a 42-day parole to get his agricultural equipment repaired.

He mentioned that his son, who too has a stake in his land at Raipurrani in Panchkula district, near here, is living in Mumbai and cannot look after the land.

In August this year, Rathore had sought parole on similar grounds, but it was denied by the Panchkula administration.

Anand Prakash, father of Aradhna, the sole eye witness to the molestation, had earlier opposed Rathore's plea saying, "There could be attempts to harm the witnesses, Girhotra (Ruchika' father) and our family. Definitely everybody's life is under threat and he (Rathore) should not be out on parole."
