Special Investigation Team (SIT) is all set to cross-check former junior home minister and BJP dissident Gordhan Zadaphia's statements recorded before it. SIT had allegedly observed that there are many discrepancies in his statements and is thus all set to start a series of questions probably before arresting him.

Zadaphia has been summoned six times by SIT to record his statement in connection with the post Godhra riot cases as well as for the complaint filed by Zakia Jafri in the Supreme Court. He had also submitted a letter of nine pages which may reveal many new names in the post Godhra riot cases. "After submission of the letter, he was called three times by SIT to be questioned," a SIT source said.

Zadaphia is probably the only accused, mentioned in Jafri's complaint, who has been called the maximum number of times by SIT for questioning. However, there are many discrepancies found in different statements of Zadaphia and in other's statements where his name was levelled. The last time his statement was recorded was on Friday, when he was quizzed for around seven hours.

"There are many statements that Zadaphia has given and which have been recorded. There appears to be many differences in the statements recorded which creates doubt on his authenticity," a source in SIT said.

The source said, so far Zadaphia's name has been brought in the recorded statements of Babu Bajrangi, Maya Kodnani, Jaideep Patel and Bipin Panchal -- all of whom are accused in Jafri's complaint. SIT sources said they are in the process of recalling all the statements and cross-checking them with Zadaphia's statements.

Sources said that CBI earlier deposed before the Nanavathi Commission that as the then Minister of State for Home, Zadaphia had shown communal bias by questioning Rahul Sharma, who was posted as the district superintendent of police at Bhavnagar, about the reasons why more Hindus were killed in Bhavnagar in police firing against rioters.

Currently, the investigation in connection with Jafri's complaint has been handed over to the deputy commissioner of police, Detection of Crime Branch, Himanshu Shukla, who along with his team is investigating the case.
