Soon, law to crack down on Ahmedabad litterbugs

Here's a word of caution for people giving the garbage containers a miss and dumping waste on the roads. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is all set to take strict legal action against the litterbugs.

The civic body is considering formulation of bylaws for solid waste management (SWM) in the city for better regulation and implementation of municipal solid waste management. The proposal of implementing bylaws has been sent to the standing committee for approval. 

Once the bylaws are implemented, the civic body can take legal action against those littering the city and penalise them under the Bombay Provincial Municipal Corporation (BPMC) Act.

Speaking to DNA, municipal commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra said, "All India Institute of Local Self Governance (AIILSG) has proposed to make bylaws for us and we have accepted the same. The implementation of bylaws will give us a legal tooth for taking actions." He further said that the legal route will be taken for the practices and penalising.

With this, Ahmedabad is most probably the first city to implement bylaws for solid waste management, added Mohapatra. In India, municipal corporations of some of the major cities like Mumbai and Pune have implemented bylaws. Now, AMC has decided to emulate these cities.

Mohapatra added that while certain concepts will remain the same as in Mumbai and Pune, a few other concepts will be specific to Ahmedabad city. The bylaws will be in consistence with the BPMC Act and rules.
