The CBI investigation into 'encounters' by the Gujarat police has kicked off a raging political storm in the state. While the BJP staged a nationwide dharna against the UPA government for using the CBI for political mileage, the Congress in Gujarat retaliated squarely by releasing to the media, the Supreme Court order detailing that the UPA government had no role to play in CBI's functioning.

Simultaneously, GPCC president Siddharth Patel also announced the party's plans to reach out to people in all talukas of the state starting May 19. Through leaflets, posters and public rallies, the party will reach out to people on how the BJP is interfering with the processes of the law and attempting to "create a communal upheaval because they fear that they will be fixed by the Supreme Court's direction to probe the larger conspiracy''.

Addressing the media, Leader of Opposition Shaktisinh Gohil lashed out at the BJP saying the saffron party's protests against the CBI amount to contempt of court. "The BJP is trying to upset social harmony by making such political allegations over a sub judice matter. They addressed the media over the issue, organised dharnas outside Parliament, put up spiteful posters against the Congress and released ads in newspapers through an agency in Vadodara, all of which could flare up communal emotions. BJP is scared that their involvement will be exposed," Gohil said.

He added that if the ruling party in the state feels something is not right with the investigations, they should take legal measures, instead of politicising the issue. "When the CBI gave a clean chit to the Modi government in the Haren Pandya murder case, LK Advaniji made public statements, certifying the CBI as an 'independent, intelligent and reliable agency'. Now they are making accusations otherwise," he said.

The opposition said that the Gujarat government was given enough opportunities to probe the case appropriately, but after the initial 19 arrests, there was no movement. "The apex court found their status reports erratic, and therefore ordered a CBI inquiry," said Patel.

If the BJP is looking at turning this into a political opportunity, the Congress too is all set to go to villages with issues related to law and order, marginalisation of Dalits, corruption at all levels of government functionaries and water scarcity in villages. "Today, villagers are also aware of the ongoing issue. We will take the facts to the masses and highlight how the BJP is politicising it," Patel ceded.
