The central bureau of investigation (CBI) has set up a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the Sohrabuddin Shaikh fake encounter case. A full team for the probe will be ready soon.
Two senior officers of the CBI — assistant director P Kandaswami and the chief investigating officer of the Sohrabuddin Shaikh fake encounter case, Amitabh Thakur, arrived in the city from Mumbai on Wednesday. Both the officials belong to the special crimes branch of CBI, Mumbai.
They submitted an application to the state government, seeking infrastructure to set up an office for the investigation that has been ordered by the Supreme Court. Once the office has been set up, the agency will speed up the process of selecting the other members of the probe team.
Most members of the SIT will be from the special crimes branch of the CBI, Mumbai. But officials from CBI, Gujarat branch may also be included in the probe team, though most CBI officials in the state belong to the agency’s anti-corruption division.
“Our role in the entire process is just to provide the logistics to the Mumbai branch and the liaison for the officials of the investigating team,” superintendent of police, CBI, Gujarat, Deepak Damor told DNA.
He further said that, currently, the agency is busy translating the documents of the Sohrabuddin case from Gujarati to English. “All the documents that were handed over to the CBI by the CID (Crime) of Gujarat are in Gujarati language and have to be translated,” Damor said. The investigation may
start once all the documents have been translated.
On Tuesday, the CBI had registered a fresh FIR against some police officers of the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad and the Rajasthan Special Task Force. It has named 14 police officials in the FIR. The CBI may soon get custody of the accused, who are currently lodged in the Sabarmati jail.
