Impudent thieves have always made a mockery of city cops' claims of ‘stringent patrolling’ by upping their attacks on residential as well as commercial complexes. In the last few months they have moved a step further and have thrown an open challenge to the Vastrapur police station officials by committing several daring thefts at places located at stone’s throw from the police station.

Take the case of businessman Mahendra Patel's house at Utsav bungalow, situated close to the police station, which was targeted in September this year. Thieves walked away with booty worth Rs5.67 lakh including cash in broad daylight. Another apartment, Goyal Intercity, located opposite Utsav bungalows, was targeted twice by thieves this year. In one of the recent incidents, thieves stole valuables worth Rs2.40 lakh including cash from one Geeta Utwani's house in the complex.

This apart, chain snatchers too have cocked a snook at the police bandobast. An elderly woman received the worst shock of her life when her gold chain was snatched from her when she was well within the vicinity of the police station. In another incident, fake cops robbed a senior in front of the police station itself, leaving cops red in the face!

“In one of the instances a woman was robbed beside the Shani temple which is situated very close to the police station. However, while the police recorded the incident they tried to hide the exact location of the crime, which incidentally is Vastrapur police station, they ended up writing it as Sal hospital, which inadvertently is located right in front of the police station itself!" said a source.

“This is a serious concern that we have been witnessing over the last couple of months. It shows that we will have to be more vigilant and intensify our patrolling near the police station's vicinity," said assistant commissioner of police, VR Toliya.
