RK Raghavan, chief of the Supreme Court appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT), on Friday held a series of meeting with advocates looking into the 2002 riots cases. A source said that Raghavan’s visit assumes importance as the apex court had recently framed charges in the Naroda Patia, Naroda gaam and Gulbarg society massacre cases.

Raghavan, who is in the city for the past two days, met public prosecutors and defence counsel representing the Naroda Patia, Naroda gaam, Gulbarg Society and Dipda Darwaja massacre cases.  While the SIT chief held a meeting with advocates appearing in the riots cases of Ahmedabad at the Old High Court building in Navrangpura, he held meetings with advocates appearing for Dipda Darwaja massacre in Gandhinagar.
Earlier on Thursday, the SIT chief had held a meeting with prosecution lawyers RK Shah and Naina Bhatt, who are appearing for the Gulbarg society massacre, and defence counsel.

Bhatt said, “Raghavan was satisfied with the progress in the case because till now, of the 500 witnesses, the prosecution has examined as many as 92 in the past one month.”
Advocate PR Agarwal, who is appearing for the Dipda Darwaja case, said, “The SIT chief held the meeting along with other members of the investigating agency like Paramjit Singh and Ashish Bhatia.” They discussed about various aspects of the cases, including the number of witnesses examined so far and the progress in the case.

Agarwal further said that till now, the prosecution has examined 28 witnesses in the Dipda Darwaja case. Of these, nine witnesses are injured and have supported the prosecution and two police personnel, who are also witnesses in the case, have also supported the prosecution.

The source said that after holding meeting with advocates in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, Raghavan left for Anand in the evening.
