In a bid to inculcate awareness about traffic rules among people, the traffic department of the Ahmedabad city police has embarked upon a unique initiative. It has invited entries for a photo exhibition and competition, which will be held in September this year.

The department has invited citizens to send photographs which they believe highlight the problems faced by citizens in the city. Traffic police officials say that winners of the competition will receive cash prizes aggregating Rs1 lakh.

A senior police official told DNA, “The idea is to inculcate traffic rules’ awareness among citizens through best photographs. Anyone can participate in the competition by sending entries. The competition is meant for the public. The photographs should have a connect with traffic problems in some way or the other.”

Officials said that the response to the competition has been very good as they have received many entries. The department has fixed four different classifications for entries. These are: ‘Traffic and life’, ‘Traffic and humour’, ‘Mobile phone, traffic and life’ and ‘Mobile phone, traffic and humour’. DCP (traffic) MM Anarwala said, “We will utilise the selected pictures to create awareness about traffic rules among citizens.” Officials said that they had already received a number of entries from citizens.

Some of the sample photographs that the department has put up on its website www.trafficphotocompetition.com include photos which show traffic chaos and the
ease with which traffic rules are violated. For instance, in a sample photograph, there are more than two riders on a bike. In another, a truck loaded with people on a
deserted highway has the words ‘Ram bharose’ written over the number plate. “Only people who send photographs which are interesting can win the competition,” an official said.

While cash prizes for winners in category 1 and 2 range from Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000, cash prizes in category 3 and 4 range from Rs 1,500 to Rs 5,000. The last date for submission of entries is September 5.
