Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan today said blamed the UPA government for the steep price rise of essential commodities and said it was skyrocketing due to the laxity of the Centre.

"The prices have shot up because of the laxity on the part of the Centre and vested interests of some people," Chouhan told reporters here.

The government was in a slumber when the prices were on rise due to vested interests, he said.

"Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar has stated now that the prices will be in check in ten days. This could have been done six months back," he added.

The BJP leader said whenever the issue of price rise crops up vehemently, the Centre shrugs off responsibility claiming that it is a state subject.

The party would intensify its protest against the essential commodities price rise, he said.
