Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina would visit Kolkata tomorrow to pay her last respects to late Marxist patriarch Jyoti Basu.

Hasina will reach Kolkata by a special flight tomorrow afternoon and will be in the city for an hour or so, sources said here today.

Hasina had during her visit to Delhi last week voiced concern over the condition of Basu's condition and expressed her desire to visit him at the Kolkata hospital, but said paucity of time prevented her from doing so.

In a condolence message to prime minister Manmohan Singh, Hasina, described Basu as "one of the leading political figures" of the sub-continent and his death was a "great loss" not only for India but also for the South Asian region as a whole.

She recalled with deep gratitude Basu's "enormous support" to Bangladesh's liberation war in 1971 and his personal role and initiative in strengthening relations between Bangladesh and India.

Hasina also recalled Basu's efforts for conclusion of the Indo-Bangladesh Ganges water-sharing treaty in 1996.
