Despite the recent spurt in petty offences, the crime rate in city has gone down comparatively.

Cases of serious crimes-murders, attempt to murder, rioting, kidnapping, and robbery-have remained under check in the first two months of 2011, with police citing better policing and efficient crime detection as the main reason for the decline. However, petty crimes like house break-ins have registered a rise.

According to records available with the city police, 2,008 cases of serious crime were reported in Ahmedabad during January-February, 2011.

These were 11% less than January-February, 2010 figure of 2,252 cases. This is the lowest number of such cases since 2003.

As compared the corresponding period last year, murder cases have gone down 43%, attempt to murder by 78%, kidnapping by 33% and rioting by 27%. Robbery cases have fallen by 7%.

In addition, pick-pocketing cases have also been reduced by 77%. However, cases of house break-ins have gone up by 4% in the city.

Similar downward trend has been witnessed in sector-I police stations like Ellisbridge, University, Vastrapur, Naranpura, Satellite and others.

In the initial two months of this year, 1,037 seven cases of serious crime have filed with sector-I police. This figure is 18% lower than 1,264 cases registered during the corresponding period last year and the lowest since 2003.

As compared to last year, murder cases have fallen by 14%. On the same line rioting cases have shrunk by 45%, vehicle theft by 38%, chain snatching by 20% and house break-is have also gone down by 42%.

Satish Sharma, joint police commissioner (JCP), sector-I, said that better policing and detection of crime has helped keep criminal activities under control.

"All cases of kidnapping and ransom-seeking this year have successfully been detected and guilty have been duly punished," Sharma said.

The police have also netted a few gangs of thieves and that has helped solve a number of cases. "Navrangpura police have solved 20 cases of house break-ins by nabbing a gang. Gujarat University police have also arrested a Rajasthani gang and solved the mystery of three major thefts," the JCP said.

Moreover, for better safety of angadia workers and jewellers city police have taken nuanced steps. "Police are escorting angadia workers to ensure safe delivery of valuables they carry. Moreover, with the help of angadia firm owners and jewellers, we have installed CCTV cameras on roads in Manek Chowk, Kalupur and Khadia-the areas where a number of jewellery shops and agadia offices are located," Sharma added.
