Security tightened in New Delhi

The security machinery has been put on high alert in the national capital after inputs that
suspected LeT operative David Headley might have conducted a recee for carrying out a terror strike.

A senior police official said Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs) have been activated and patrolling intensified across the city after Union home ministry asked five states, including Delhi and Maharashtra, to be on alert as Headley may have carried out recee of some vital installations for carrying out strikes.

Home ministry officials have said the alerts had been issued as a precautionary measure to the cities after it was found during investigations that Headley, who was arrested by FBI, had visited India nine times during 2006-09.

"Security has been strengthened in the capital. The preparations have been reviewed at the home ministry in the presence of top police officials," police said.

Police is also planning to conduct mock drills to check the preparedness of security agencies in case of terrorist attacks and a security audit of vital installations and other prominent buildings.

"We are intensifying the checkings at border posts also," the official said.

The city police is also coordinating with their counterparts in districts in the neighbouring states.
