Fifteen school boys in the age group of 12-14 got a taste of scientific experiments from up close on day one of the five-day science workshop organised by the Meghnad Saha Dal at the Jnana Prabodhini Prashala in Sadashiv Peth on Monday.
The workshop allowed the young students to try their hands at simple experiments in physics, chemistry and  biology.

A spot visit to the school on Monday morning revealed that the young students were soaking in the magic of scientific experiments from mentors and teachers who were not much older than them.

Speaking to DNA, Nachiket Nitsure (20), one of the organisers of the workshop said, “We have been conducting these workshops for the last five years and nearly 100 children have taken part in them. We introduce the children to simple scientific experiments and projects. The children are allowed to brainstorm and find
solutions.’’

Himanshu Jahagirdar (12) of Thane, who is presently in the city to spend his summer vacation said, “My grandfather asked me to register myself for this science workshop. I was also curious to find out how sharp the Pune students were as compared to students
in Mumbai.’’

Himanshu said he was fond of physics and was curious to know whether he needed to memorise formulas to make experiment successful.

Another young mentor, Aditya Hardikar (15) from Abhinava Vidyalaya, told DNA he was passionate about science and mathematics and had been volunteering at the camp for the last three years. “I regularly visit the camp and have now started assisting the group which conducts experiments and introduces science to children who are in  standard VII and VIII.’’

Nitsure said the five-day science workshop was basically an outreach programme where the aim was to promote science and develop scientists. “We aim at making today’s youngsters think and act on their  inventions,’’ Nitsure said.  Interested students and parents can contact Nachiket  Nitsure on 9404225378.
