IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt has submitted an application to the Nanavati-Mehta commission requesting it to direct the DGP office, the ADGP (state intelligence bureau) and the chairman of the Supreme Court-appointed SIT to provide him with the relevant documents of the riot period.

Bhatt submitted his application on Monday during his deposition before the Nanavati panel in connection with the communal riots of 2002.

Bhatt has also mentioned in his application that he is privy to a
lot of information regarding the facts and circumstances that led to the riots.

"I can assist the commission in uncovering the truth behind the incident of violence at Godhra railway station on February 27, 2002; as well as the facts and circumstances, including the administrative complicity and official orchestration, that led to and facilitated the Gujarat riots of 2002," the IPS officer has written in his application.

Bhatt has also mentioned that he was posted as deputy commissioner of intelligence at the state intelligence bureau (SIB) from 1999 to 2002.

While posted in the SIB, he was in-charge of internal security and was also designated as the 'nodal officer' for sharing of intelligence with various agencies of the state and country, his petition states.

However, Bhatt has also mentioned that as former deputy commissioner of intelligence responsible for internal security, he was bound by an oath of secrecy not to disclose any privileged information, unless under a binding legal obligation to reveal such information.

He has requested the commission to issue any other necessary and appropriate order for the requisition and production of relevant documents and records. Earlier, Bhatt had written to the DGP in-charge Chittranjan Singh, ADGP Sudhir Sinha and SIT chairman RK Raghavan asking them to provide him with the relevant documents of the riot period.
