Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav’s efforts to mollify his sulking aide, Amar Singh, seem to have gone kaput.

Exactly a week after claiming that he would resolve the differences between the maverick politician and his detractors within the party; the SP chief on Sunday accepted Singh’s resignation from all posts he held within the party.

Though Singh continues to be party’s primary member and a member of the Rajya Sabha, SP sources claim that it is only a matter of time before he may leave “for greener pastures”.

Singh had resigned from the posts of SP general secretary, national spokesperson and member of the party’s parliamentary board on January 6 citing “health reasons”. Almost immediately after Singh faxed his resignation to the SP chief from Dubai, several SP leaders had dubbed the maverick politician’s move as a “pressure tactic to regain his clout in the party”.

The resignation had triggered a crisis within the party with actor Sanjay Dutt also following in “elder brother” Amar Singh’s footsteps. Dutt, who was also SP general secretary, resigned from the post claiming that he was “upset with the way SP leaders like Ram Gopal Yadav (Mulayam’s cousin) treated Singh”.

While Ram Gopal Yadav and party veteran Mohan Singh had suggested that Mulayam must accept Singh’s resignations without further delay, the SP chief said on January 10 that he would not do so.

SP sources confirmed that Mulayam’s efforts to broker peace between Singh and his detractors in the party never really took off.
On Sunday, a letter from Mulayam read: “Dear Amar Singhji, with a heavy heart we accept the resignation... you have made immense efforts in strengthening the party and for this I will be indebted to you forever.” It has been faxed to Singh who is in Mumbai, campaigning for SP leader Abu Asim Azmi’s son Farhan Azmi, the party candidate for Bhiwandi assembly bypoll scheduled for January 20.

SP sources say that now it’s almost certain that a slew of other resignations, particularly from the party’s “glamour brigade”, would follow. Whether Sanjay Dutt’s resignation has been accepted is not known yet. Sources claim party MPs Jaya Prada and Jaya Bachchan would follow suit. The fate of leaders like Abu Azmi and Obaidullah Azmi is also uncertain.
