Sumptuous jail bhajiyas not only tickle the taste buds of hundreds of people across the city but also set the cash registers ringing for Sabarmati jail in Ahmedabad. The snack, income from which regularly crosses the Rs10 lakh mark, is the single biggest earner for the jail among products made at the prison by its inmates.
Apart from bhajiyas, Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati jail earns money from weaving, carpentry, bakery products, stitching work and a printing press.

For the financial year 2011-12, the jail has earned a profit of Rs10,73,533 from the sale of its bhajiyas. The figures are for March-October 2011 period. With five more months left before the financial year ends, this figure is certain to go up.

Last year, the income from sale of bhajiyas was Rs 17,40,589.

The second biggest income generator for the city jail this year has been the weaving section which has earned Rs 8,56,062 so far.
Explaining why bhajiyas remain the biggest earner for the jail, BC Dhangan, superintendent of jail industries, said that income generation is instant in the bhajiya business. “There is no credit involved. The product is sold and we get cash in return. This is one of the many reasons why bhajiyas remain a money-spinner,” he said.

Dhangan further said that in the case of other activities, such as carpentry, the goods produced are sold on credit to the government, semi-government organisations and public institutions.

“As a result, it takes some time before the proceeds from the sales are realised,” he said.  In fact, the data on income of various jails of the state indicates that bhajiyas remain a money-spinner for all the prisons of the state. In 2009-10, the total income from bhajiya of all the jails was Rs35,01,367.

This fell slightly to Rs31,14,951 in 2010-11. Of all the prisons in the state, the Sabarmati jail continued to contribute the most by way of jail income through its industries. In 2010-11, it had contributed Rs46,57,597, followed by Vadodara jail which contributed Rs19,72,573 as income.
