But nine years down the line, the marriage is on the rocks with the Russian lass invoking the Domestic Violence Act against her Indian husband, who is a prominent cardiac surgeon in a reputed city-based private hospital.
The duo fell in love when the surgeon went to Russia to pursue his medical studies.
A sessions court, however, has given the estranged couple time to resolve their dispute by referring the matter to the mediation cell, and fixed the date for hearing on May 30.
The woman, a mother of an eight-year-old girl, who is residing at an orphanage in Burari has been awarded an interim maintenance amount by the court.
The doctor has however, challenged the maintenance order, claiming that it was his Russian wife who had abandoned his home after being upset for reasons best known to her.
In his appeal before the sessions court, the man alleged that his wife left home on September 1 last year at the alleged instigation of a woman lawyer and two social workers, who, he claimed were bent upon destroying his marital life.
The doctor, hailing from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, had married the girl from St Peters Bevry in Russia in August 2000 after a six-year-old courtship.
The doctor has claimed that he had been bearing all the expenses of his wife since they started living together at St Peters Bevry in Russia from October 1994. She used to come to India to stay with his family at Lucknow at regular intervals even before the marriage.
The woman, on the other hand, claimed that she was regularly harassed by her mother-in-law for not bringing "sufficient" dowry.
She also claimed that she was being harassed for giving birth to a female child.
"It is evident that the allegations levelled against the respondents (man and family) constitute verbal and emotional abuses, which clearly come within the purview of the Domestic Violence Act," Metropolitan Magistrate Charu Agrawal had said.
The court had in an order on December two last year also directed the doctor, who claims he is earning only Rs 36,000 per month, to pay her Rs 8,000 towards interim maintenance and rent.
It had also under the DV Act restrained the man and his family from communicating with the woman under the Act.
