Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has reportedly hinted that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s senior leader and leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha LK Advani should make way for a successor.

Sources said a change in BJP’s central leadership will be effected before the end of the year when party president Rajnath Singh’s term also draws to an end. Recent statements by party leaders about Advani continuing as leader of opposition and his own comments to the effect apparently made the RSS reach this decision.

A meeting between RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and Advani on Tuesday has further fuelled speculations in this regard. While details of their meeting are not known, it is believed that the two leaders discussed the state of the organisation and the coming chintan baithak.

Instead of being told to quit directly, Advani has reportedly been asked to choose his successor. Advani, however, was reported by Rediff.com as saying he would continue as leader of opposition. “I am surprised by a report in a section of media that the RSS chief is upset about my decision to continue as the leader of opposition. I did meet him on Monday and told him about the BJP's fine performance in parliament,” Advani told Rediff.

“During the course of our interaction, I told him about a communication with the media that on the last day of the session, I intend to continue as leader of opposition,” the veteran leader said.

In a similar development in Rajasthan, BJP’s central leadership has asked former chief minister Vasundhara Raje to step down from her post of leader of opposition in the state assembly.

Raje is putting up a tough fight. Sources in the state organisation said Raje may visit Delhi with a group of legislators to pressurise the central leadership to revoke the decision. The order to step down is reportedly part of an arrangement made after the election under which then state president Om Mathur and organisational secretary Prakash Chandra quit their posts.
