In a sensational case in the city, a gang of four robbers escaped with Rs28 lakh which they robbed from an employee of an aangadia firm near the Income Tax crossroads between 8 pm and 10 pm on Monday, when the latter was travelling in a rickshaw from Income Tax to Navrangpura.

Babha Patel (55), an employee of Madhavlal Maganlal Aangadia firm and a resident of Palanpur, was kidnapped and beaten up before being relieved of the money he was carrying. The perpetrators of the crime were travelling in an autorickshaw and on a scooter. The incident occurred when Patel hired the autorickshaw from Oswal Restaurant near Income Tax to go to the head office of the aangadia firm at Chinubhai Towers in Navrangpura. “He hired the rickshaw and sat in it, but after it crossed Income Tax circle two more passengers got into the vehicle,” senior police inspector, Naranpura police station, BD Vaishnav told DNA. Vaishnav further said that the driver slowed down to allow his two accomplices to get into the rickshaw. According to Patel, who made the official complaint, the two persons who joined him in the vehicle covered him with a blanket and tied his hands with a rope.

The rickshaw driver did not stop his vehicle and so no one heard Patel’s shouts in the running rickshaw. “On the way from Income Tax to Thaltej the culprits looted Rs28 lakh as well as a mobile phone from Patel,” Vaishnav said.

According to Patel’s complaint, the looters threw him out of the rickshaw after untying his hands. “After realising that all his cash had been robbed, Patel went to the Vastrapur police station,” Vaishnav said.

While the incident took place between 8pm and 10pm on Monday, the police complaint was lodged in Naranpura police station at around 1am on Tuesday. The police took the complainant to the scene of the crime and even to Palanpur to get more details of the crime.
