In this IPL season, authentic commentary on the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), a team owned by a flamboyant liquor baron, Vijay Mallya, will be provided by a  young man from the officially dry Ahmedabad.

Aneesh Surender Madani — a student of the Mudra Institute of Communication Ahmedabad (MICA) — was appointed as the chief blogger by the RCB after he won a contest  organised by the team. Fittingly,  the contest was called the Fanatic Fans Challenge.

“I am very, very excited now,” Surender said. “The opportunity has come at the right time.” Surender returned to the Mica campus on Friday evening, after winning the contest on March 3. “Not everybody gets the opportunity to travel and stay with an IPL team,” he said.

The Fanatic Fans Challenge invited online entries from RCB fans, seeking contestants with exceptional writing, photography, videography, and commentating skills.

Apart from the chief blogger, RCB has picked from the pool of contestants, a chief photographer, a chief videographer, and a
chief podcaster.

Nine competitors were chosen for each category from over 1,300 entries. The finalists were judged by the RCB coach, Ray Jennings; the team captain, Anil Kumble; the team honcho Siddharth Mallya; and Sambit Bal, the editor of a cricket website, cricinfo.com.

The four winners will be able to accompany the RCB throughout the tournament, and will be granted access to all RCB matches. They will fulfill their duties under the different titles for which they have been selected.

As the chief blogger, Surender will update fans on the team news, and interact with them during the upcoming IPL season, which begins on March 14. The link to the blog will be updated at www.royalchallengers.com/fan-club or www.royalchallengers.com/blogs. Surender, who already has a job offer in hand, will graduate shortly.
