Revenue slump may hinder Commonwealth Games projects

The slump in Delhi Government's revenue collection in the current fiscal may have an adverse impact on its efforts to ramp up city infrastructure ahead of the Commonwealth Games.

Officials said the Government reported a fall of over Rs400 crore in collection of tax revenue in the first four months of the current fiscal.

Worried over the dip in revenue generation, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit last week asked top officials of the Revenue department to double up their efforts in tax collection as the shortfall may impact the government's preparation for the prestigious event.

Reeling under the impact of the economic slowdown, Delhi Government had reported a fall of over Rs1,300 crore in tax revenue in the last fiscal also.

Last year, the government had collect nearly Rs14,000 crore. "The fall in revenue collection is a matter of concern. But we are doing our best to minimise it," finance minister AK Walia said.

Although Walia maintained that the Government will not allow the dip in revenue collection to affect Commonwealth Games projects, officials admitted that it may some impact on them.
